Appropriately enough, since the topic of the day is a road, Cllr Nick Wallis, in the Echo yesterday accused the Lib Dems of "gutter politics" for suggesting that he might bear some of the responsibility for the £1.9m overspend on the Eastern Transport Corridor.

Labour Portfolio holder admits responsibility for budget control.

Responsibility for the Eastern Transport Corridor was once in the hands of Labour Councillor Nick Wallis, formerly portfolio holder for Transport. Councillor Wallis expressly stated in his blog that responsibility for ensuring the project came in on budget lay with him. He wrote: "Overseeing the completion date and budget will be a key task."

Walls come tumbling down!

The residents of flats 14-19 Selaby House, Spring Hill, heard a loud rumbling noise on the night of February 29th. They woke up the next day to an amazing sight. Two 8 feet high walls around the outside bin area had completely collapsed, blown down in a gale.

Cllr Swainston speaks out against planning application

Martin Swainston has spoken out against the revised application to redevelop Croft House in Hurworth Place. The previous plans involved converting Croft House into flats, with new houses built in the grounds. No doubt because of reports of a downturn in demand for flats, Yuill have now re-submitted plans which involve the demolition of Croft House and its replacement by more new houses.

Lib Dem budget amendment rejected by Labour

At the Special Full Council Meeting on February 28th, Cllr Mike Barker, on behalf of the Lib Dems, moved an amendment to the Labour Party Budget. The Lib Dem Group has been campaigning for the devolution of budgets and decision-making to neighbourhoods, wards and local areas. We believe that Cabinet is not the right level to decide neighbourhood issues.

Figures published yesterday for Secondary School admissions in 2007 show that Darlington last year was one of the poorest performers in the whole country at providing parents and pupils with their first choice of secondary school. While in nearby Stockton every single child went to their first choice school, Hartlepool managed 98% and Durham 97%, in Darlington only 66% got their first choice. Darlington languishes near the bottom of the national league tables, along with most of the London Boroughs.

The Northern Echo reported this morning on the General Teaching Council's reprimand for the former Head and Deputy Head of Eastbourne School, who falsified pupil attendance records in 2005. It is not clear why it has taken three years for this to come to light, but it is one more depressing chapter in the sorry history of Eastbourne School, which has consistently failed its pupils.

Labour's financial incompetence leads to service cuts

The overspend on the Pedestrian Heart scheme - a figure which is still not finalised but will be something over £2million - has put severe pressure on the Labour Cabinet as they attempt to produce a budget for the coming year. With pressure on the capital account - made worse by another overspend on the Eastern Transport Corridor - now there is real pressure on the revenue account too.
