Since the by-election in September 2005, Cllr Martin Swainston has been living up to his election promises. He has lost no time in sorting out some of the problems raised by voters during the election campaign.
The area at the entrance to the Primary School walkway was, as the photograph below shows, a mess of builders' rubble, graffiti, rusting posts and railings. It had been like this for at least ten years, yet the local Conservative councillors did nothing about it.
Within a few weeks of his election, Martin had held site meetings here and elsewhere with Darlington Borough Council officers. A clean-up programme was agreed, and the results are beginning to be seen.

Following complaints by local residents about fly-tipping, Martin investigated the area between Hawkswood and Eden Close, Hurworth. Having seen the area spoiled by illegal fly-tipping, Martin took action and arranged for a team of litter-pickers from the Council to clean the area up.
At the same time, brand new signs have been erected at the top of Eden Close to prevent this from happening again. There are also new anti dog-fouling signs.
