The pleasant footpath and cycleway beside the River Skerne, running the length of North Road ward, comes to a scruffy end under the Albert Road bridge. Street Scene are fighting a constant battle against graffiti and litter, as a result of youngsters gathering there for illegal drinking - and worse.

Plans to extend the path all the way into town have been held up for years because the Council has so far been unable to purchase the land that the path would have to cross.

When it does open, it will be a well used public path. Now, it's just a dead-end, providing meeting places for unwelcome visitors. This is one reason why North Road Lib Dem Councillors are keen to see the path extended.

On his regular check of the area, Cllr Fred Lawton found that the brick wall blocking the path through an archway in the Skerne railway bridge had been knocked down, allowing access to the other side of this historic bridge, which carried the world's first passenger railway. A temporary fence had been put up to block access, but it proved very temporary - somebody has thrown it into the river!

The land on this south side of the bridge has been cleared of trees and undergrowth. The soil has been tested for contamination, in preparation for use as a footpath. Fred raised the issue in Council and learned that we are 'close to an agreement' with the landowners.

Your Lib Dem Councillors will keep pressing to get this long-awaited thoroughfare completed.
