Peter Freitag, Lib Dem Councillor for Park East ward, is angry at the potential loss of a valuable town centre sports field, which was granted to the people of Darlington for the playing of sport. The Feethams football ground, vacated by Darlington Football Club when they moved to a new out-of-town stadium, is being sold for development as a housing estate.

Peter says the original fields, half of which are still used as a cricket pitch, are protected by a trust for the playing of sport.

Peter is also very concerned about possible flooding problems caused by water run-off into the river. The development will also lead to increased congestion on the already busy Victoria Road, which will be made even worse if Sainsbury's are allowed to double the size of their store.
