Greg Stone, the Lib Dem Candidate in the Sedgefield By-election, has written to Jack Straw MP, the new Minister of State for Justice, to ask him how much Tony Blair's decision to abandon Sedgefield will cost taxpayers. Greg said, "Over the past week I have spoken to dozens of former Labour supporters angry at being left in the lurch by the former Prime Minister. People tell me that the least that Blair could have done is stick around and use his influence to sort out the neglect of Sedgefield.
"I have written to Jack Straw asking him how much this election will cost to run and who is footing the bill? I am sure that local taxpayers would have liked to see that money put towards much needed upgrading of Newton Aycliffe town centre or better health facilities."
Estimates suggest that the figure to run the election could be as much as £100,000.
