As we suggested yesterday, today's Echo carried an exclusive report by Olivia Richwald, confirming rumours that Asda had also tabled an interest in the town hall and bus station site in March 2006.
The Council leadership decided not to make this public, apparently because the Tesco scheme would be worth more financially to the Council. Most Labour and all Conservative and Liberal Democrat councillors were unaware of Asda's expression of interest.
The existence of this undisclosed offer on the table casts a huge shadow over the Labour Cabinet's claim that the consultation process is genuine and open. Clearly, the Cabinet has not revealed all relevant information to the public. How can we trust the Council to assess the results of the consultation with an open mind, when they are prepared to keep relevant information from the public?
