Stop Press: Tesco: Rumours of gagging orders and the whiff of scandal

September 6, 2006 8:41 PM

If rumours circulating this evening are true the whole Tesco debate may be about to blow wide open. Have there been other bids for the Town Hall site which have not been revealed to councillors or the public? If so, the whole thing stinks.

Another rumour is that the Borough Solicitor has written to the Leader of The Conservative Group warning them not to express any strong views on the Tesco application. To do so may mean they are barred from voting on the issue should it come before full Council.

We regard this as an unacceptable interference in the right of democratically elected representatives to participate in what is supposed to be an open and wide-ranging public consultation. We would expect all councillors from all parties to be allowed to do so. This issue is too important to restrict debate. Will the iron fist of the Labour leadership allow Labour councillors a free vote on this matter? We doubt it.
