For reasons known only to the traffic planners at Darlington Council, the slip road from Thompson Street East on to North Road has been closed. Typically, neither local Liberal Democrat Councillors nor local residents were consulted about this decision. As a result, traffic is now no longer allowed to filter on to North Road.
The inevitable build up of traffic on Thompson Street East has been made worse by the lights being set so that only 3 or 4 cars at a time can cross the lights. To make matters worse, the two lanes approaching the junction are so narrow that usually cars are waiting in single file.
As a result, drivers are searching desperately for a short cut to North Road. Fitzwilliam Drive and Leyburn Road have been turned overnight in to rat-runs.
With so many other 'improvements' being made to North Road, traffic chaos has followed. North Road Liberal Democrat Councillors Fred Lawton and Steve Jones have asked the Council to undertake a full survey of new traffic movements in the area, with particular reference to the creation of rat-runs, once all the changes are completed.
As one respondent to our North Road ward survey said, "What kind of idiot dreamt up this plan?"
