News that the Darlington cattle market is to move from its present site near Bank Top railway station to a purpose-built facility outside the town is welcome. At long last, with local elections looming in 2007, Labour Councillors have decided that Clifton Road is an unsatisfactory location for the mart.
As far back as 1967, Liberal Democrat Councillor Peter Freitag campaigned to have the abattoir and cattle mart removed. At the time, the Northern Echo carried a photo of Peter looking at animal entrails discharged from the abattoir straight into the public drains.
Peter was successful in stopping cattle being driven along Park Lane and cattle trucks parking in adjacent streets. However, his proposal to move the mart to the outskirts of town was rejected, mainly because the value of the site was not included in the calculations.
In the 2003 local elections, Liberal Democrats surveyed local residents and found overwhelming support for moving the mart away from this residential location.
At last, after 40 years, the Labour Party has caught up with public opinion. What is important now is that local residents are fully consulted about what will be built on the site once the mart has gone.
